Trends in international markets for tropical produce

Trends in the tropical products cocoa, coffee, rubber and cotton indicate that after decades of slow but sustained growth in price, consumption, production and stock levels, there might be erratic but dramatic increases in these parameters coming up.

I posted yesterday about BackType and, spending some more time with it, I am really excited about the one thing I think is most important about this tool above all else: Discovery! Yesterday I talked about how you can find new blogs by following some movers and shakers in your niche with BackType. You follow on BackType just like Twitter. The next two weeks are going to be pretty busy. On Sunday the 3rd Digital Citizens Indaba takes place at Rhodes Univerisity, Grahamstown. The DCI started while I was teaching at Rhodes and contributed to significant volumes of grey hair for myself and Colin Daniels, the organiser. The event is one of the few pan-African citizen media forums that focus on blogging and activism and is always a lot of fun. I’ll be speaking at the closing of the event and giving a brief wrap-up of the key issue

Y'know, those pesky GameSetLinks are back again, headed by, OK, a DVD-related article on how you file, stamp, and annex your movie collection, but one that's wholly applicable to games, too - at least in the pre-digital era. Also hanging out in here - the inevitable Billy Mitchell Pac-Man article, some cool Japanese music phones that one could imagine being used for game purposes, a couple of classy 1UP articles (on game addiction and Itagaki), and largish amounts of other things. Sample News Group has purchased three daily newspapers from GateHouse Media Inc. The Pennsylvania-based newspaper chain bought The Morning Times of Sayre, Pa., The Standard-Journal of Milton, Pa., and the Palladium-Times of Oswego, N.Y.

Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) currently is under investigation for treatment of sever, treatment-resistant depression (TRD). It is not really news. I wrote about it in 2005. The background information in the earlier post still is pertinent, so I won't repeat that now. Briefly, though, the treatment consists of surgical implantation of a pacemaker-like device. The device has wires that go into the brain (area 25, the subgenual cingulate area). The study reported in 2005 was promising, but
